The dimensions of the existing floating foundations are already big – just to handle a 5MW turbine. Our compact solution is adequate for a 10MW turbine. While the existing turbines are 5MW, the market is now leaning toward the 7-10MW range. Currently the market is looking at big turbines. Paul de la Gueriviere: From a technology point of view, our solution can work for anything from 1-20MW turbines. Wind Energy Update: What is the optimal sized turbine for IDEOL's floating foundation?

The farm lay out would only be modified for important wind direction changes and not for small temporary (below 30 minutes) ones. Paul de la Gueriviere: The foundations’ repositioning would be suggested automatically by the software/sensors, and then confirmed by an operator.

Wind Energy Update: Do the foundations reposition automotically via wind sensors and the software programme? Or is it down to the technician to reconfigure the wind array? Where you would incur a 10-15% productivity loss with fixed position turbines, IDEOL’s solution would incur almost no decline in productivity. If there is even a small change in the wind, the location of some of the platforms will be altered. With the floating foundation, we have addressed this issue by developing a mechanical solution that enables the foundations to move on their mooring lines, coupled with a software solution that optimizes the layout of the wind farm. But if the wind direction changes even slightly, you lose productivity. In other words, the turbines are placed in the optimal location for the prevailing wind direction. Paul de la Gueriviere: With onshore and shallow water bottom fixed turbines the wind farm array is designed to reduce wake loss. Wind Energy Update: IDEOL's solution can reduce losses due to wake effect by up to 70%.

Wind Energy Update speaks to CEO Paul de la Gueriviere to find out how whether the company really has come up with the IDEOL solution for deep water offshore wind. In June last year, a small team of French engineers, software developers and financial experts established a base in Marseille from which to launch their novel concept of a floating wind trubine foundation that can be repositioned according to prevailing winds.
